Did you know that CuriousGeorge was originally known by another name in the United Kingdom? CuriousGeorge first arrived on the scene during the reign of King George VI. Since no one wanted to associate the King with a monkey, CuriousGeorge became known for a time as "Zozo."
Regardless of how he's named, CuriousGeorge in any culture remains the same adorably mischievous monkey who's at the center of all sorts of silly adventures. Today's generation of grandparents grew up on what are now referred to as the "Original Adventures," or the first seven books in the CuriousGeorge series that were written between 1941 and 1966. (CuriousGeorge actually made his first appearance as a character in a 1939 book entitled "Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys.")
A second series of CuriousGeorge books, now mostly out of print, appeared between 1984 and 1993. The third series, "New Adventures," appeared in 1998 and continues to this day. In addition to the books, CuriousGeorge stars in his own Public Broadcasting System television series and animated films. The "New Adventures" book series is actually based in part on animated telefilms that debuted in 1980.
CuriousGeorge is also the subject of instructional computer games accessible through the PBSKids website and a play land within the Universal Studios Florida theme park called "Curious George Goes to Town." Kids enjoy an outdoor wet play area that features water jets, water guns and a giant water bucket that periodically dumps its contents onto the guests. The indoor portion allows guests to launch soft foam balls at each other or into an elevated bucket with any one of a number of cannons. Sounds like appropriate CuriousGeorge mayhem!
Let's not forget the Man with the Yellow Hat, Curiousgeorge's long suffering guardian. Poor man! George will never stop getting into trouble, and the Man with the Yellow Hat will never stop rescuing him from himself. Every mischief maker needs a foil!
