Bermuda dining has gotten a bad rap, due to a lack of originality in the menu options offered and the high prices. Bermuda dining has come a long way in recent years, however, and is improving greatly. The problem that many people have with Bermuda dining is not an issue of the quality of food, as most consider the food to be excellent; the most common complaint about Bermuda dining is that there is very little in the way of cuisine that is unique to the island. You can find all sorts of different cuisine in Bermuda, from British, Italian, American, French and Carribean to Indian and Oriental, so you will have plenty of options to choose from; you just may not find much that you could not get elsewhere. If you are looking to try local cuisine, be sure to check out the crab, lobster, clams, oysters and mussels. You can also find locally grown fruits and vegetables, and if this is something you are interested in, be sure to ask your server where their ingredients come from.
If you are looking for a cocktail to wash down your food with, it should come as no surprise that the most popular drinks in Bermuda are rum based. The Dark n' Stormy, a cocktail made with rum and ginger beer, and the Rum Swizzle, a cocktail made of rum and fruit juices, are two popular drinks on the island. If you are a smoker that likes to enjoy a cigarette or cigar after dinner or with a drink, then you should know that all restaurants and bars in Bermuda are non-smoking establishments.
The price of Bermuda dining is quite high, because nearly everything besides fish and sea food must be imported. Over three quarters of the food in Bermuda must be flown in, and most of that comes from the United States. Meat must be flown in, so it is not necessarily going to be as fresh as you may desire, so it is wise to stick to fish when it comes to Bermuda dining.
Bermuda dining tends to be a very formal experience compared to many other island getaways. Be sure to check the dress code of each restaurant before you visit, as many require a jacket and tie for men. Many of these questions can be answered far ahead of time, long before you actually eat at the restaurant, since you will have to call ahead to make reservations anyway at many of the restaurants in Bermuda.
