Military moving and planning is something that everyone in the military knows about. Those in the military have to move quite frequently and change duty stations a lot. You will need to military moving plans as soon as you get your orders. Military moving plans can start with a plan to save up cash for the move.
If you are not doing a do it yourself move you should make an appointment and go see your local Personal Property Shipping Office. You will have to make your own plans if your military moving will be done on your own. You should immediately inform you landlord that you will be moving. Then start looking for new housing near your next duty station. You can start doing this about 3 months before your move.
Go to the post office and put in a change of address about a week before your move is to take place. You should be able to find approved military moving companies to help you move if you need one. Do it yourself military moving will present the need for moving truck rental. The military will reimburse you for necessary expenses if you save your receipts. Usually, military moving will be long distance moving. Long distance moving has some special requirements. For example you may need to stay in a motel during the move. You will be reimbursed if you have to stay up to 3 nights in a motel. When military moving is long distance you meals will be reimbursed too.
If you hire a moving company make sure they are approved by the military. Most military moving companies have insurance to cover damages if anything should happen to your property during the move. Any vehicle that you rent for do it yourself military moving should be insured as well. Any trailer that you rent should be insured. Accidents that happen during military moving should be notified to the police and a copy of the accident obtained. You will need this report to claim a loss or damages. It is a good idea to carry your own auto insurance when driving a rental truck during military moving. Look in your phone book, on the internet or for advertisements for military moving companies on base if you will be making a move soon.
