The internet is a growing beast. At least that is one way I like to think of it. Everyday it seems like it grows more and more, and I cannot help but think of some creature like the Blob. It amazes me how fast technology grows, and how often you hear words associated with it become more and more common. One internet buzz word I keep more and more of is something called patch management. Patch management is one of those internet phrases that are both complex and simple at the same time. It is somewhat simple to understand, but to put in practice patch management is extremely complex and difficult. An easy way to define patch management is to say that it is managing patches. But what patches are we talking about here? We are talking about computer patches, or pieces of software that are designed to fix problem areas of computers. Almost anyone who has used a computer before knows that there are many different things that can go wrong with it. Computers, sometimes it seems, are just built to break down. But a smart and savvy computer user knows that computers are complex machines that have millions of lines of codes, and in reality run pretty smoothly considering. Patch management is growing amongst us non-computer engineer types because what you are expected to fix is growing. Of course, some people still call in the IT guy when they cannot get their computer working. But some find that simple patch management can solve their problems. Patch management gets it name because what we really are talking about is 'patching' a hole or problem area. Patch management these days usually involves downloading a patch from a software developer's website, and then applying that patch to the software that does not seem to be working. Patch management may seem like a complex thing, and like I said before, in practice, it is. But what you need to understand about patch management is easy: patch management is fixing or patching up bad software.
